Pricing looks simple from the outside. A number on a product page. A discount. A shipping fee. But once you start building, you realize - pricing is not just a number. It’s a system of decisions. While building The Not So Perfect Art, pricing didn’t sit in isolation. It connected deeply with fulfillment, payments, and the overall buying experience.

Pricing Is a System, Not a Line Item

Pricing isn’t just about cost + margin. It’s shaped by:

  • Production cost

  • Shipping charges (surface vs threshold decisions)

  • Payment gateway fees

  • Platform costs

  • And most importantly—perceived value

Every layer adds weight to the final number. But customers don’t see the layers. They experience the outcome.

The Invisible Design Behind Pricing

A ₹999 free shipping threshold is not just a number. It’s a nudge.

It quietly asks:

“Would you like to add one more product?”

A ₹50 flat shipping fee isn’t just cost recovery. It’s a trade-off between simplicity and conversion. These are not just operational decisions. They are behavioural design choices.

Pricing Shapes Conversion

Pricing directly impacts:

  • Cart value

  • Drop-offs at checkout

  • Product bundling behavior

  • Perceived brand value

For example:

  • Too low → reduces perceived quality

  • Too high → creates friction

  • Too complex → creates confusion

The goal isn’t just to “price right.” It’s to make the decision feel easy.

Learning While Building

One of the biggest shifts was realizing: You don’t get pricing right on day one. You iterate.

You observe:

  • Where users drop off

  • What gets added to cart

  • How thresholds influence behaviour

And then you adjust.

Pricing Is Experience Design

At some point, pricing stops being a finance decision. It becomes a product decision.

Because:

  • It shapes how users navigate your store

  • It influences what they buy

  • It determines whether they complete the journey

You’re not just setting a price. You’re designing a path.

👉 Pricing looks like math. But it behaves like psychology. And when you’re building from 0→1, you start to see it clearly - You’re not just pricing a product. You’re designing decisions.
